Choosing a Communication and Data Storage Platform

As companies become more dependent on digital tools and programming the data that drives them is becoming a more important element. In many instances the storage and exchange of data is vital to the relationships businesses have with their customers, clients, and other partners. If data is lost or compromised, it can deprive those parties of trust, and result in business loss.

Enterprises need a reliable platform for communication and data storage to avoid losing valuable information. Platforms must be able to handle massive amounts of data real-time, and be able to keep this data forever. They must also permit multiple systems to easily access data.

There are two main types of storage for data that are network-based and direct area. Direct-attached storage, or DAS is stored on hardware connected to the computer. Examples include hard disk drives, USB flash drives, optical discs and solid-state drives such as compact discs and digital video discs. DAS devices can be more expensive than storage that is networked but they provide more speedy access and better local backup capabilities.

Network-based data storage is stored on servers connected to a network, usually in the data center. This type of storage enables greater information sharing and provides better disaster protection and redundancy than DAS. It is more affordable depending on the selected storage option. Common solutions include network-attached storage (NAS) storage area networks (SAN) and object storage platforms.
